Historically, Japanese castles, or ‘shiro’ (城), were not merely military fortifications but also symbols of power, centers of governance, and the residences of the powerful daimyō, the feudal lords who ruled Japan. The most iconic element of a Japanese castle is the main keep, or ‘tenshu’ (天守), like the one represented in this model. The golden age of Japanese castle construction was during the Azuchi-Momoyama period (1568-1600), a time of intense civil war followed by the unification of the country. Castles built during this era, such as Himeji, Matsumoto, and the now-lost Azuchi Castle, featured massive stone bases (‘ishigaki’), complex layouts with multiple baileys, and towering multi-storied keeps. These structures were designed to withstand sieges, featuring high walls, moats, and strategically placed arrow slits (‘sama’) and stone-drop chutes (‘ishi-otoshi’). The elegant, curving roofs and white plaster walls, however, also served an aesthetic purpose, projecting an image of wealth, sophistication, and divine authority. This model embodies that dual nature, serving as both an impregnable fortress for your wargames and a stunning piece of architecture for any display.
