Historically, the caravel was a revolutionary ship design developed in the 15th century by the Portuguese. Small, highly maneuverable, and swift, it was the vessel that powered the early days of the Age of Discovery. Its key innovation was the use of lateen sails, which allowed it to sail much closer to the wind than earlier square-rigged ships. This agility made it ideal for exploring unknown coastlines and navigating treacherous waters. Initially developed from fishing boat designs, the caravel’s shallow draft allowed it to sail in coastal waters and up rivers, giving explorers unprecedented access to new lands.
Famous explorers like Bartolomeu Dias, who first rounded the Cape of Good Hope, and Vasco da Gama, who pioneered the sea route to India, relied on caravels for their perilous voyages. Perhaps the most famous caravels were the ‘Niña’ and the ‘Pinta’, two of the three ships in Christopher Columbus’s first voyage across the Atlantic in 1492. As voyages became longer and the need for cargo space and defensive firepower grew, the caravel evolved. The ‘caravela redonda’ incorporated a square-rigged foremast with the lateen-rigged mainmast, combining the speed of square sails in a following wind with the maneuverability of the lateen rig. This model pays homage to that golden age of exploration, allowing you to recreate those epic journeys or forge entirely new legends on your tabletop.
