Use the towers as elevated firing positions for your archers or riflemen, and make the grand gatehouse the ultimate objective in a dramatic siege scenario.
Historically, the fortifications of Cartagena de Indias (in modern-day Colombia) stand as one of the most formidable and extensive defensive systems ever built in the Americas. As a key port in the Spanish Empire, Cartagena was the primary hub for shipping vast quantities of plundered gold and silver back to Spain. This immense wealth made it a prime target for pirates, privateers, and rival European powers. Consequently, from the 16th to the 18th centuries, Spain invested heavily in its defense, creating a masterpiece of military engineering. The city was surrounded by a complex network of walls, bastions, and forts, designed in the ‘Trace Italienne’ style to resist cannon fire. Prominent features included thick, sloped walls (taluds), angular bastions that allowed for overlapping fields of fire (enfilade), and iconic sentry boxes known as ‘garitas’. The most famous element of this defensive complex is the massive Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, a fortress that dominated the approaches to the city and successfully repelled numerous attacks, most notably the massive British assault during the War of Jenkins’ Ear in 1741. This 3D printable set captures the spirit and architectural style of these legendary defenses, allowing you to recreate the epic sieges and daring raids of the Spanish Main on your own tabletop.
