The sculptor behind the models

Iain Lovecraft is a professional designer, sculptor, and engineer whose passion has always lived at the intersection of art and craft. Before the hobby world knew his name, he was already working in the film industry — creating props, sets, and physical models for productions that demanded the same obsessive attention to detail you’ll find in every STL file he releases today.

That professional background explains something you’ll notice the moment you load one of Iain’s models into your slicer: these aren’t files made by someone who learned 3D printing as a weekend hobby. Every rivet, every timber grain, every facial expression is the work of someone who has spent decades understanding how three-dimensional form translates from concept to physical object.

A pioneer from the very beginning

Iain Lovecraft entered the world of 3D printable miniatures in 2013 — before resin printers were affordable, before most hobbyists had heard of an STL file, and long before the tabletop printing community became the thriving ecosystem it is today.

In one of his first Kickstarters, All Roads Lead to Rome, raised nearly €19,300 from 215 backers — over 3,800% of its goal — and introduced hobbyists to a new standard for what 3D printable historical miniatures and terrain could look like. This was the first project on Kickstarter ever, that featured 32mm miniature figures that could be printed at home. Iain Lovecraft was the first to innovate and bring printed miniatures to the tabletop. This started the 3D printed miniature trend that is so popular nowadays. The campaign included a full Roman City Pack, an Underworld pack, and a Roman War Galley stretch goal, all designed for FDM printers at a time when resin was still out of reach for most people.

Over the following years Iain Lovecraft launched more than twenty Kickstarter campaigns, building a devoted community of backers — his “League of Backers” — who have come to trust that every project delivers on its promises.

Twenty campaigns. Eight major category themes.

Each Iain Lovecraft campaign is built around deep historical and thematic research. The major collections to date include:

Every collection spans both miniatures (optimised for resin printers, pre-supported for clean prints) and terrain (engineered for FDM, support-free by design). No other independent STL designer covers this range with the same level of historical fidelity.

Art Of Iain Lovecraft

Recognised by the industry

Iain’s work has earned recognition well beyond the 3D printing hobby. His designs have been featured in Wargames Illustrated, one of the hobby’s most respected print publications and Fantasy Figures International, issue #27. Companies including Sally4th have created metal reproductions of his work — a mark of how well his digital sculpts translate to physical manufacture.

The quality of his 12K+ resolution models also caught the attention of major consumer brands. Both Disney and Mattel are among the companies that have licensed Iain’s designs, producing physical versions of his work for their own product lines. It is a rare distinction for an independent designer in this space, and a direct reflection of the professional-grade fidelity that defines every model that carries his name.

What “Iain Lovecraft quality” means for your printer

Every file released on i-lovecraft.com is test-printed before it goes on sale — on both entry-level and high-end machines. Terrain is engineered to be support-free on FDM printers, with wall thicknesses, overhangs, and surface textures calibrated specifically for printed output. Miniatures are pre-supported for resin, with light-touch support tips that snap off cleanly without damaging surface detail.

When you buy from i-lovecraft.com, you are not buying a mesh. You are buying a piece of battle-tested engineering designed to print successfully the first time, every time.
