Historically, the Snekkja (from Old Norse ‘snekkja’, meaning ‘thin and projecting’) was a formidable class of Viking longship, representing the pinnacle of Norse naval engineering. While smaller than the great Skeid or legendary Drakkar, the Snekkja was the most common type of longship and formed the backbone of Viking fleets. Typically measuring around 17 meters (56 feet) in length, it was a versatile warship characterized by its long, narrow, and light construction, with a shallow draft that allowed it to navigate rivers deep inland and land directly on beaches—a crucial advantage for surprise raids. These ships were built using the clinker technique, where the hull planks overlapped and were riveted together, creating a flexible yet remarkably strong structure capable of withstanding the harsh North Atlantic. A Snekkja could carry a crew of around 40 warriors, who were also the rowers, propelling the vessel with oars when the single large, square sail was not in use. Our model faithfully recreates these historical elements, from the oar-ports and rowing benches to the iconic shields mounted along the gunwale, which offered protection during combat. The ornate carvings on the prow were not just decorative but were also symbols of status and power, intended to intimidate enemies and inspire awe. By printing the Snekkja, you are not just creating a gaming piece; you are recreating a vessel that enabled an entire age of exploration, trade, and conquest.
