Historically, the Geobukseon was a type of large Korean warship used during the Joseon Dynasty. While first mentioned in records from the early 15th century, these ‘ironclad’ vessels are most famously associated with the brilliant naval strategist Admiral Yi Sun-sin and his victories during the Imjin War (1592-1598). The Turtle Ship was a revolutionary design, essentially a heavily armed Panokseon (the main Korean warship class) with a fully covered and armored deck. This ‘shell’ was likely covered with iron plates and sharp iron spikes, making it nearly impervious to Japanese grappling and boarding tactics, which were a staple of their naval strategy.
The ship’s most fearsome feature was its dragon-head prow, which served not only as a psychological weapon but also as a housing for a cannon or a smoke generator, which could obscure the ship and disorient the enemy. The Geobukseon was armed with numerous cannons on all sides, allowing it to deliver devastating broadsides as it maneuvered among enemy formations. It was faster and more maneuverable than one might expect, powered by both sails and a significant number of oarsmen protected within the hull. This combination of heavy armor, formidable firepower, and tactical flexibility made the Turtle Ship the dominant force in the waters around the Korean peninsula, securing critical victories against the invading Japanese fleet and ultimately helping to turn the tide of the war. This model pays homage to that legendary vessel, allowing you to recreate its heroic sagas on your tabletop.
